So, you think you own it…

October 22, 2017

Whatever we buy with the emperor's coin is not actually ours. Christ is the Lord whose image is not on any coin but who has chosen us to imitate him, bear his image, and become the currency of love and blessing in the world. He will give us eternal life as our everlasting possession.

Readings from Isaiah 45:1-7; 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10; Matthew 22:15-22.

Preached by the Rev. Jake Dell on October 22, 2017 at Holy Trinity Church Inwood.

Lord, I am done trying to save myself

October 15, 2017

Joy is proof that we have entered the kingdom. Christ is the reason for our joy because he has written our names in the book of life. Being of the same mind in community is now possible, and we may attain it by rejoicing in the Lord of our salvation.

Readings from Isaiah 25:1-9; Philippians 4:1-9; Matthew 22:1-14.

What the world rejects, God accepts

October 8, 2017

To be rejected by the world is to be found by God. Christ is the son and heir who is rejected, killed, and cast out so that God may vindicate him. Jesus regarded his loss as nothing compared to the surpassing value of God's promise to raise him from the dead. We can share in his vindication and resurrection once we stop counting our losses and start answering God's call.

Readings from Isaiah 5:1-7; Philippians 3:4b-14; Matthew 21:33-46.

When it’s time to take a knee

October 1, 2017

A humbled heart changes hearts. In Christ, God humbled himself to change our hearts so that we can turn to God and live. Therefore, at and in Jesus' name we must "take a knee," serving each other as Christ served us, because each one of us is a work of God.

Readings from Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32; Philippians 2:1-13; Matthew 21:23-32.

God loves those the most who deserve it the least

September 24, 2017

Christ is the generous master who always pays a living wage, whether we’ve earned it or not. Since many are far from God, his love has to go that much farther to reach them. He must love them more. We must not be jealous when we see God loving others, but instead share abundantly in their joy when they finally discover how much (and by Whom) they are loved.

Readings from Jonah 3:10—4:11Philippians 1:21-30Matthew 20:1-16.

All debts are owed to God

September 17, 2017

Christ is the merciful king who forgives us from his heart. Knowing our neighbor’s debt has been forgiven we must forgive our neighbor, for we cannot remember what God has chosen to forget.

The debt to love

September 10, 2017

Justice is not finished until it achieves reconciliation. Christ paid the just penalty for sin when he died on the cross, but the work of reconciliation continues. Our primary task as Christians is not to punish the wicked, but to seek reconciliation and healing from the effects of sin.

Readings from Ezekiel 33:7-11Romans 13:8-14Matthew 18:15-20.

God is still calling us good

September 3, 2017

We must learn to love and serve without any sign of success or gain. Christ’s love and Christ’s ministry bring him to his cross, where he suffers and dies. Yet there he works a salvation that vindicates both him and us. Knowing this, we can find the courage to love when love fails and serve when our service comes to nought.

Readings from Jeremiah 15:15-21Romans 12:9-21Matthew 16:21-28.
