God’s mind is changed by human actions

January 21, 2018

Trapped on earth

January 14, 2018

The Church (as Christ's body) is the living ladder between heaven and earth. On the cross God closed the gates of heaven to Christ but opened them to us, making it possible for Christians to live "on earth as it is in heaven."

Readings from 1 Sam. 3:1-10; 1 Cor. 6:12-20; John 1:43-51. Preached by the Reverend J.W. Dell on January 14, 2018 at Holy Trinity Church Inwood.

There is life after sin

January 7, 2018

Christ's identification with sinners begins when he is baptized in the Jordan with them and continues until he dies for them on the cross. Now it's up to us to identify with Jesus, and live as dearly loved children of God.

Readings from Genesis 1:1-5; Acts 19:1-7; Mark 1:4-11.

You can’t force holiness

December 31, 2017

Believers volunteer to live holy lives, just as Christ volunteered to destroy sin, the enemy of holy living, when he died on the cross. By exchanging his holiness for our sin, we may exchange our sin for his holiness.

Readings from Isaiah 61:10-62:3; Gal. 3:23-24, 4:4-7; John 1:1-18.

Eve heard it first

December 24, 2017

Mary alone among created mortals joins with God in the act of re-creation, declaring her fiat, uniting her will with the Divine to say, "let it be." Thus, she reclaims both the words and the goodness of the first creation, at the very dawn of the second.

Readings from Isaiah 9:2-7; Titus 2:11-14; Luke 2:1-20.

The creature known as Adam

December 17, 2017

The first Adam rejected his identity as the image bearer, but Christ reclaims it, and Christ's public identity is revealed when he is raised on the cross. Because Christ identified for a time with us sinners, we may identify with him for eternity in the holy presence of God.

Readings from Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11; 1 Thess. 5:16-24; John 1:6-8, 19-28.

Full disclosure

December 10, 2017

Through Christ, God keeps his promise to begin the renewal of the human race. Christians must be patient with a world that is still far from perfect and work diligently alongside of Christ for its renewal.

There’s a limit to how far God will let us fail

December 3, 2017

Preparing for the Lord's return means staying awake and being blameless, but it is Jesus himself who must prepare us for his return.

Salvation by association

November 26, 2017

We are judged by the nation we belong to. Christ is the head of a new human nation born into original faith, not original sin. How we treat the sons and daughters of this new nation will show if we truly belong to it.

Readings from Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24; Ephesians 1:15-23; Matthew 25:31-46.

Are you invited to enter into the joy?

November 19, 2017

God's grace must be shared in order for it to increase. Christ receives the full measure of grace on our behalf (since because of sin we receive much less than we should). Because of Jesus we can give generously, from an abundance that is not ours by right, but is nevertheless ours to share.

Readings from Zeph. 1:7,12-18; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11; Matthew 25:14-30.
