Are you invited to enter into the joy?

November 19, 2017

God's grace must be shared in order for it to increase. Christ receives the full measure of grace on our behalf (since because of sin we receive much less than we should). Because of Jesus we can give generously, from an abundance that is not ours by right, but is nevertheless ours to share.

Readings from Zeph. 1:7,12-18; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11; Matthew 25:14-30.

Preached by the Reverend J.W. Dell on November 19, 2017 at Holy Trinity Church Inwood.

Forever now

November 12, 2017

The day of the Lord is not a human day. Christ is the heavenly bridegroom seeking his divine consort. We who are the Church are his bride-to-be. By setting aside foolish attitudes, beliefs, and ways of acting we make ourselves ready for him. By shining the lamps of our faith we can be sure that he will see us and know us.

Readings from Amos 5:18-24; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 25:1-13.

Preached by the Reverend J.W. Dell on November 12, 2017 at Holy Trinity Church Inwood.

The demands of burdensome words

November 5, 2017

A word that burdens is not a word from God. Christ is greatest of men, yet the servant of all. His word eases and removes our burdens. When we accept Jesus for who he is, as God at work in us, we will be filled with his power and able to ease and bear the burdens of others.

Readings from Micah 3:5-12; 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13; Matthew 23:1-12.

How to stop hating

October 29, 2017

We cannot love God without loving our neighbor. Christ is both man and messiah, both our God and our neighbor. Not only must we love our neighbors as ourselves, we must love our neighbors just as much as we love our God.

Readings from Leviticus 19:1-2,15-18; 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8; Matthew 22:34-46.

So, you think you own it…

October 22, 2017

Whatever we buy with the emperor's coin is not actually ours. Christ is the Lord whose image is not on any coin but who has chosen us to imitate him, bear his image, and become the currency of love and blessing in the world. He will give us eternal life as our everlasting possession.

Readings from Isaiah 45:1-7; 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10; Matthew 22:15-22.

Lord, I am done trying to save myself

October 15, 2017

Joy is proof that we have entered the kingdom. Christ is the reason for our joy because he has written our names in the book of life. Being of the same mind in community is now possible, and we may attain it by rejoicing in the Lord of our salvation.

Readings from Isaiah 25:1-9; Philippians 4:1-9; Matthew 22:1-14.

What the world rejects, God accepts

October 8, 2017

To be rejected by the world is to be found by God. Christ is the son and heir who is rejected, killed, and cast out so that God may vindicate him. Jesus regarded his loss as nothing compared to the surpassing value of God's promise to raise him from the dead. We can share in his vindication and resurrection once we stop counting our losses and start answering God's call.

Readings from Isaiah 5:1-7; Philippians 3:4b-14; Matthew 21:33-46.

When it’s time to take a knee

October 1, 2017

A humbled heart changes hearts. In Christ, God humbled himself to change our hearts so that we can turn to God and live. Therefore, at and in Jesus' name we must "take a knee," serving each other as Christ served us, because each one of us is a work of God.

Readings from Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32; Philippians 2:1-13; Matthew 21:23-32.

God loves those the most who deserve it the least

September 24, 2017

Christ is the generous master who always pays a living wage, whether we’ve earned it or not. Since many are far from God, his love has to go that much farther to reach them. He must love them more. We must not be jealous when we see God loving others, but instead share abundantly in their joy when they finally discover how much (and by Whom) they are loved.

Readings from Jonah 3:10—4:11Philippians 1:21-30Matthew 20:1-16.

All debts are owed to God

September 17, 2017

Christ is the merciful king who forgives us from his heart. Knowing our neighbor’s debt has been forgiven we must forgive our neighbor, for we cannot remember what God has chosen to forget.
